PLACE ME IN A STRAITJACKET, ALL YOU
[film watched last tuesday] -- central station
this spells trouble.
the former 50/50 introvert/extrovert has finally decided to shift the balance to a 25/75 ratio, with predictably disastrous results.
last week coming out of my comm 100 class i was greeted by a group of people claiming themselves to be UP cineastes members. oooh. cineastes. they look like a bunch of fun-loving people. they made me sign up right there and then. i never knew there was such a thing as impulse signing-up until i experienced it.
and so here is an inventory of the things that will take up the crazy 25/75's time this semester:
1. 21 units (Comm 100, Lingg 110, J101, Film 100, Film 106, MPs 10, and Math 114)
2. an org(UPCB) and 3. its project(the CET review every Saturdays)
4. five orgs to apply membership at, plus their requisite what-have-yous (UP Cineastes, UP Tomo-Kai, Union of Journalists of the Philippines--UP Chapter, UP Mass Communicators Organization, and UP Kontra-gapi)
5. my job at the Math department as a student assistant
6. other rakets, not to be disclosed in such an open thing as this
7. house chores
8. being a helping hand in the family business.
9. church choir practice and other religious duties
10. attempts at shedding pounds through planned physical exertion(or simply, exercise)
11. keeping my sanity while managing to squeeze all of the above into my timetable.
...geez, what a useless piece of banter online this post is...

DISPARAGIA
[song on my mind] -- something stupid by robbie williams and nicole kidman (correct me if i'm wrong...)
being transferred to the SET (student evaluation of teacher) encoding in the workplace is enough to move me to a mini-scene featuring me having some sort of dramatic mini-soliloquy. the DOS-system that is used for SET encoding drains one's patience, not to mention eye tolerance.
i went back to narra last night. bad luck. my favorite bus line had already their fare matrix/taripa and instead of being given a change of 29 pesos, i was handed only 18 pesos. an eleven-peso increase?!! that's frivolous! everyone, especially me, the impecunious freak, will weep at such a drain, especially if one commutes everyday. oh oh oh oh oh!
now who says economics is not a dismal science? die adam smith, die! (oops, forgot adam smith is dead for such a long time. change it, then.) burn in hell, adam smith! burn in hell you!
of course not many people can relate to what i'm saying; the regular readers of this blog are in no bad shape as this that i am in. you get what i'm saying? ...perhaps you could spare me some amount for a glass of light frappucino at starbucks? hehehe...
but i end this post a crestfallen person. and trust me, this will not be the last time you will see a post with this title. 2, 3, who knows...

MIXED EMOTIONS
[korean film watched last friday] -- JSA
i feel mixed emotions right now. it's a mixture of feeling real blessed, feeling felicitous, feeling pulchritudinous, feeling struck by bad karma, and feeling cursed by some powerful magical entity that i cannot tell who. i feel abstract right now, having in an instant lost that ability to make concrete what is inside me right now. hmmm...

quinta-feira, junho 23, 2005 **** THE PROOF THAT Masakatsu Kakuta IS EVIL **** Turn the number backwards, and add 1181 - the year UFO was first observed in China and Japan. The number is now 100160. Add 1351 to it - this is the year Richard Roose was conveniently boiled to death for trying to poison an archbishop, written backwards - you will get 101511. Subtract 1609, the year Gallileo, inspired by the Satan himself, came up with his ridiculous theory. The result will be 99902. Turn the number backwards, and add 1 - the number of unity . The number is now 21000. Turn the number backwards, and add 1778 - the year Oliver Pollock invented '$', the symbol of exploitation, suffering and injustice. The number is now 1790. The number 1790 is the year US patent system was established (eevil). This clearly proves how evil the subject is. QED. How about you? Do you have your own proof yet?
I HAVE LONG KNOWN, BUT HAVE NEVER HAD PROOF. TILL NOW.M A S A K A T S U K A K U T A

HALER, GWEN GARCI...
Yes, you've probably heard it, like, a million times, because of that infamous (and for the nth time, irritating) ringtone that, for example, might suddenly manifest itself in an MRT ride or something. This is just pure madness, us Filipinos, like the column of Conrado de Quiros(Philippine Daily Inquirer) says. He writes that we have the propensity to laugh at even the worst of crises that come our way, political, natural, or whatever.
...so I have no choice but to laugh with our countrymen.
here's some from his column today:
"Woman: "All the Arroyos are thieves." Man: "You're being unfair." Woman: "Why, are you an Arroyo?" Man: "No, I'm a thief." It's funnier in the original Tagalog. What can one say? The pickpockets of Quiapo steal only wallets. The pickpockets of Malacañang steal even votes."
"Flash: GMA's popularity has surged to an all-time high. Her CD has just gone platinum."
ah, but here for now. ciao!

THE WEEK IN REVIEW: 14-17 JUNE 2005
TUESDAY: BANGAG
tuesday, the first day of class last week(due to gloria's proclamation of a non-working holiday last monday), started on a rather drowsy note. i went to comm 100 class still feeling groggy. my mind could not distinguish people i met, and so i was tempted to greet everyone a very tongue-in cheek "Hi Violy!" :-P
:-)my mind awakened, albeit rather slightly, in my lingg 110 class. still i just in a haze followed what ma'am cepe was saying. good grief. she might catch me trying to catch some forty winks there. :-P
then film 100. finally direk ed lejano came, and after filling up our filling up of our classcards, asked us what our favorite film was. oh no. i don't watch films. what should i tell them? what should i tell them? i racked my still hazy brain for pieces of scenes that were randomly scattered around my bionic file system. oh yeah. to be amusing, i had to divide those i watched into required and non-required. at least. i stood in front of the class after giving my classcard, and in a usually stage-frightened voice told them, "Um, my name is Masakatsu Kakuta, but it's cumbersome, so please call me Sam. I don't usually watch films unless required, (at this point laughter). and of those required my favorite was 'The Soong Sisters', and of those required, um, Ring."
"'yung Ringu?"asked direk
"yessir."
"why do you like it, aside from the fact that it's japanese?"
oh no. quick thinking, sam. quick thinking. "um, the cinematography, sir." uh oh. i said something i knew nothing of. what was cinematography anyway? and how did it get into my fuzzy vocabulary made fuzzier by the day's more than usual fuzziness?
"ah, the cinematography, which was, by the way, shot in shades of blue, green, and gray. in contrast, the moulin rouge was shot in shades of screaming red, pink, yellow, and... exactly the opposite colors."
i went back to my seat after bowing slightly. whew.
and because of that, i resolved not to go to my filipino creative writing class. i've had a tough time after direk made us watch an indie movie entitled "living in oblivion."
i went to bed early hoping to get up early enough to get to church choir practice the next day.
WEDNESDAY: Escape from Manang Lags's Retirement Party Performance
The day as a student assistant in the Math department went on smoothly. Nothing interrupted my filing the faculty's curriculum vitae, my photocopying of papers, and so on and so forth. Amazing how one cannot escape a dull dreadful life if one resigned to a life of routine. But thank goodness mine was not one of routine, so I still have a chance.
I managed to escape the performance before the time of Manang Lags's retirement party by telling them that it was my Journ 101 class. At which point I arranged with Ma'am Marichu Lambino(the professora) to let me attend her Saturday class instead of the Wednesday, to allow me some extra time for work on Wednesday. :)
THURSDAY: Still the Same As Yesterday
FRIDAY: Woohoo! Weekend!
Well, almost. Having your Journ 101 moved to Saturday 7:00am to 10:00am is not my idea of a weekend. Good thing I was interested in my classes for the day; I otherwise wouldn't call them classes if they weren't. My Lingg 110 class was a major's class, meaning the people there were Filipino, Anthropology, or Linggwistiks majors; Ma'am Cepe only let me in because I told her I was industrious. I felt guilty lying to her afterwards. :P But I AM doing my best naman, e. No need to feel bad anymore. :D
Film 106! My most anticipated class of the week! Well, we watched Shiri.
It was a great but gruesome movie, not a bad thing, but not that appealing to me. It tried my wholesome conservative tastes, the gory scenes. It made me sad.
Still there was no Korean prof. A former student of his taking up his M. A. in the college acted as a sub for the session. His name was Park, he didn't tell us his given name. But at least he told us the professor's full name: Kim Shin-Dong. Nice name. But I would have liked it better if his name had been Jin. :P
Then MPs 10. Oh well. Now that I think about it I regret taking it up. But I have no choice. -_-u I must finish my AH GEs already. -_-u
SATURDAY: TIRED, HAGGARD, SOMEWHAT LIKE HARASSED, BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER. ^_^
I had to get up before 7:00 in the morning. The registration person at the Journ room told me Ma'am Lambino doesn't stretch the time to the limit, but I never thought it would be like THIS. She's a TIMELESS woman. Take it from me, Journ majors who will someday consider Ma'm Lambino.
I afterwards went to the UPCB college entrance exam review at the CEM auditorium of the New Era University to lend an unwanted helping hand. Oh, what a tired day. But never mind. Someone was there during the review. ^_^
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Ah! What a long entry that was! Wha! I'm not doing such a long post for a long time anyway. ^_^cheer!

...STILL PENNILESS
[korean film watched last friday] -- shiri
this is the problem with Philippine bureaucracy; everything moves sooooooooooo slow. the disbursement voucher for my salary as a student assistant in the department of math for the month of may moves as slow as a snail on a floor covered with sticky tape. now i calculate my measly wage to arrive at a time when i have already found a better faster higher-paying partial means of livelihood and have received my salary from the said means. sigh.
still i'm sticking to it(my job) like rust stains to clothes. i can think of no other means to support myself partially. but it doesn't suck that much. i am still having fun, and, by the end of the first semester, an estimated 12,500pesos (if my appointment lasts till october 31). i cannot blame Philippine bureaucracy that much. :)

OH FILM 106!
Oh how I just looooooooooooooooooooooove my film 106 class; but let me tell you first how i ended up getting it.
i was going to take film 110(basic photography) as my CMC elective. i somehow liked to delve into photography to make my resume look more attractive to the press company. the film registration people, however, told me that the subject was open to ONLY FILM MAJORS, ONLY THIS SEM. meaning i could get it 2nd sem, but not now. what a bummer. i asked them people, "ano'ng pwedeng i-enroll ko, kung gano'n?"
they told me film 102, 104, and 106. 102:history of philippine cinema. not exciting. 104:film genres. horror, melodrama, romantic comedies, you name it, they're gonna discuss it. i was gonna take it, but asked them, just in case i could get a better deal for my money. 106:national cinemas. so what's so special about it? well, they said, in every section there's a cinematic portfolio of a different country which will be studied. some countries were russia, germany, france, etc etc.
"so ano yung sa section na Friday, 1-4pm?"
"korean cinemas."
my insides screamed.
SIGN ME UP ALL YOU FREAKING F*CKING FILM PEOPLE!!!!!!!! i almost couldn't contain my excitement, but I managed not to say bad words. :D
and on the day of the class itself i half-walked, half-ran to CMC from my lingg 110 class. i entered A107-A hoping to see someone i knew. good thing there was apol. and some minutes after i entered the room karen came in. oooooooohhhhhh, i thought, naakit din siya dun sa sinabi ng mga film people. nice.
fifteen minutes. no prof. half an hour. still no prof. finally the wait stretched for an hour before ate fortune of the film department took our attendance and finally told us that the prof was still at the airport. oooooooooh. it was all genuinely korean, then, complete with a korean prof! my insides....
unfortunately the ninoy aquino international airport is a good two-hour ride from UP diliman. so them film peepz made us watch "spring bears love." but it was so cute! -^_^- but i still was bothered by their poor english and their just as felicitous poor english titling. =P, =D
-^_^-oh, but i do get this feeling that i'll be liking my friday afternoons! -^_^-

...THE UP MASSCOMM FORM 26A EXPERIENCE OF ME
that's it. i'm never holding a UP form 26a again while i'm in journ. everyone in masscomm gets himself/herself involved in the addition of matriculation process; it's madly annoying. first the adviser, who took one look and then another, thinking it was weird for someone in journalism to take math 114(the linear algebra course). but since i placed "3rd year" in my add mat form, no worries. the 3rd years are prescribed 21 units in their 3rd year anyway. at least i didn't have to lie. =D
then the college secretary. oh no. i had to place some reason. what could i think of? i wrote down "subject closed out".
oh no no. the college secretary personally signed each and every form 26a! the clerk at the secretary's office asked me to come inside Lourdes Portus's office. she was, in two words, A BULLDOG. and i didn't know i was about to receive treatment, bulldog style.
"g-good a-afternoon po."
"ANO ITONG SINULAT MONG RASON?!! ANO ITONG 'SUBJECT CLOSED OUT'?!!"
"u-um, k-kas-se p-po, u-um, s-sinara n-na p-po n-ng m-math d-department y-yung s-subject eh..."
"EH PAPAANO KA NAKAPASOK SA SUBJECT NA ITO KUNG 'CLOSED OUT'?!!"
"u-um, k-kase p-po, p-pinayagan p-po a-ako ng p-prof n-ng subject eh..."
"AY, NAKU, BAGUHIN MO IYANG SINULAT MO DIYAN. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WROTE IN THERE?!!"
and almost in tears i went out to change my reason. but i could think of no other reason for adding my units other than trying to graduate on time. as if i could write that down. but the kindred soul that was the clerk outside her room told me something that could be written down. and i don't know what it was. i don't want to remember what it was; i'm never holding any form 26as ever again.
next, the assessment. the person behind the counter examind it, and i swear she almost like held it up to the light and tapped it with her fingers to ensure it was not counterfeit. she asked me, "ano ito? math 114?" i replied,"opo, non-CMC elective po." "ano'ng year mo na ba?" "third po."
then she asked loudly the other people, as if she wanted to catch me by making other people exclaim something,"meron bang lab fee yung math 114?" having got a negative response, she then proceeded to write 910 pesos on the form.
finally, the worst was over.
i'm never asking for another form 26a again. terror prof na kung terror prof. hmph. my experiences here have taught me only so much about the harder registration life in other colleges. >|

FIRST DAY PHUNK
[song on my mind] -- first day funk by parokya ni edgar
first day came and went, and here's my take on my first day:
first was the comm 100 class at 8:30 in the morning. i've never taken any ge comm subjects, much more a comm subject as high as 100. so i sat and waited. and waited. and waited. and saw roan.
"hi roan!"
the class was at the basement. hot as hell when i entered the corridor of the basement. hotter when we entered the classroom B5, for it was without any airconditioning yet. imagine a basement room without any ventilation! the person who opened the door turned the airconditioning.
silence. then chatter. then chatter. then a multitude of noises. then there suddenly fell with a suddenness so overcoming a hush when someone entered the room in a wheelchair. he looked old enough to be an instructor, so the hush. but then he took his place at the front of the class, moving the monobloc chairs aside to make way for his wheels. then as the hush fell so it was lifted, and once more chatter. then more chatter. then finally came the real thing. a woman with long hair entered and smiled, making the rest of the class comfortable. her name, according to her, was almond aguila. cute name. almond. i always liked cute names. i will add that to my list.
she told us she was o.c. about some things. pardon me, i think i might be exaggerating, but the way she said it i guessed she might be o.c. she was o.c. about plagiarism, deadlines, etc., etc., but i don't think it is all that bad. it just... doesn't make me an instant uno. =D
but she dismissed us early. as a result i had enough time to wolf down giniling and three cups sinangag. burp.
then lingg 110. i only took this because the adviser managed to be grumpy enough to slash out the precious intsik 10 that i managed to snag on the CRS. i had plenty enough time, so i wasted two hours just sitting in front of the room that was once my lingg 1 room. relief when the door finally opened. woah, this instructor stretches time to the max. i oughta be afraid, i thought to myself.
the professor, laarni cepe, could easily pass for an african-american-asian woman by the color of her skin. she, like aguila, was a fun teacher. i wish she would teach lingg 115 next sem.
but she oh holy cow stretches the first day timeslot to the limit! she made us watch a film taken from the discovery channel about the archives of babel, the one precursory language before language itself varied. interesting, but i was too sleepy to partake of the rich information that the video provided.
then there was commotion outside when i exited the room. down below upon the grounds between the AS and the FC was a stage set up pretty quickly that morning, and upon it there was edgar of parokya ni edgar screaming his head(and his ass probably) off, belting out tunes such as the "FIRST DAY FUNK!" ah, but of course it was a rexona promotion; who could not have already recognized their ads on tv?
but silly me. i had to go to my film 100 class.
when i got there, there was the guy in wheelchair again. is it just coincidence, or is he following me? *naughty grin* but sir ed lejano wasn't there. in his place was a note saying we should watch one of the films in the "pink film festival" to start today. there was "formula 17", a gay film from taiwan, screening at 5 in the afternoon. then there's "mga pusang gala; i think it's a lesbo film, i'm not sure. it's screening at seven in the evening. i, with no choice, will watch Mga Pusang Gala, because my journ 101 prof might dismiss the class at seven.
so i walked around, stopped by the UPCB tambayan, and goofed around till 4 in the afternoon, when it was time for my MPs10 class. from vinzons to AS, now.
but it was to no avail. there was no ligaya tiamson-rubin. and so i decided to call it a day. well, almost, after a few notebooks from national bookstore in SM north. hehehehehe....
till here for now. whew, what a long post i wrote... =D

DIE CRADLESNATCHER DIE
Watching "The Buzz" yesterday made me convulse and spew out turd more than two buckets for the record. There was queen of broken relationships-cum-The Buzz host Kris Aquino blathering about her confirmation of her impending MARRIAGE! with basketball star James Yap. Now James Yap! I'd thought Kris would go no lower than admitting she had sexually transmitted disease, but now there she was, on public television telling people who would listen(and those two unwilling people were her co-hosts Girl Abunda and Cristy Ferment) that, Tito Boy, Tita Cristy, this time, this one's FOR REAL. It's FOR LIFE. I met with his parents yadda yadda etc. etc. blaherr blaherr blaherr...
I switched the channel to a replay of Survivor All-Stars.

AN FAMOSONG PARATURO
Last Thursday I was sitting in my place in the pew. The sermon was about to start, and from the introduction of the minister I knew the first passages were to be An Famosong Paraturo, King Solomon, and his book Ecclesiastes. I thought I already knew where the sermon was headed; King Solomon's Ecclesiastes was to me a book containing wisdoms of ye olde pessimistique artes. I never quite indulged in anything pessimistic in the Bible(although my favorite book in the Bible is the Book of Lamentations, an admittedly unpopular book), and I never indulged in anything pessimistic in particular. I think I'm unpopular because I don't write about unhappy things and because I tend to have a sunny outlook(though not necessarily a sunny disposition) in life, but what can I do if no one accepts me? It is in the natural course of things. Ah, but about the Book of Ecclesiastes, I don't want to bash it; I just don't like the dreary tone, save for the somewhat hopeful ending. That's all.

SO AS NOT TO INCUR WRATH,
[song on my mind] -- i believe by shin seung-hun
i developed a habit of checking the color and pattern of ma'am michelle's (THE SUPERIOR, both in rank and size) dress everyday as i enter the math administrative office. people often come to me to ask about the results of their math removals, and i often tell them that ma'am michelle handles the grades of them people with a grade of 4/INC. they ask, "sino si ma'am michelle?" and of course if i answer, "yung malaki matabang ma'am du'n sa may bintanang jalousie," she might hear it and poof! i'll never get renewed. that's why i find it convenient to check her clothes out. i tell people, "yung naka-(color and pattern of dress here), siya si ma'am michelle." i flash a smile. :D

Am the Head of the Department of Poisons and Antidotes of the College of Substances, also doubling as the chief of the Apothecary for the Department of the National Defense. Ahem.
BUT SERIOUSLY
Am a 4th year University of the Philippines student, but currently am a non-major in the College of Mass Communication. I can write, but am really unsure of whether I write well. This is a somewhat faithful version of what I keep in my paper diaries. And yes, I DO write my diaries MANUALLY. I've already filled up thirty-three Papemelroti notebooks, and am on my thirty-four. I love to eat, and boy, my diet sure can pack the pounds on even Palito. I now am planning to reduce weight, but will execute after the hell weeks are over. :D Am planning to shift to either BS Economics or BS Statistics. Wish me luck! :D
